When the Pittsburgh Steelers were founded in the 1930s their name wasn't the Steelers at all. Originally the Steelers had the same name as their baseball brethren, the Pittsburgh Pirates. When they decided to change the name to muster up some fan support the Steelers decided to let fans send in suggestions to name the Pittsburgh football team. A man by the name of Joe Santoni offered up the name "Steelers" because he worked in the steel mills. At the time the steel industry was what the city of Pittsburgh was most famous for. The owner of the Steelers, Art Rooney, always admired the hard working citizens of Pittsburgh and thought the name Steelers would be a good representation of the city.
